VIDEO: Decentred Critical University Studies in a Techno-Science-Society

We are excited to announce the release of a new video capturing our two-day hybrid workshop, "Decentred Critical University Studies in a Techno-Science-Society," held on June 6-7, 2024, at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha.

Hosted by the Chair for Critical Studies in Higher Education Transformation (CriSHET) in collaboration with the Transdisciplinary Institute for Mandela Studies (TIMS) and the Advancing Critical University Studies Across Africa (ACUSAfrica) network, this workshop was a platform for critical engagement and in-depth dialogue. Funded partially by the National Research Foundation (NRF), it brought together scholars, students, and stakeholders from across Africa to envision a new articulation of Critical University Studies, which we tentatively call Decentred Critical University Studies (DCUS).

The workshop aimed to reframe and broaden the scope of Critical University Studies by embedding it in decolonial critiques, Africanisation scholarship, and Abolitionist University Studies. This emergent perspective, DCUS, seeks to create a new grammar for scholarship in higher education that highlights the historical context of South Africa and its connections to global emancipatory movements.
